BrainFest Outreach Initiative

The BrainFest Outreach Initiative brought neuroscience out of the lab and into the community through interactive, student-centered learning. This project aimed to simplify complex concepts through visual design, hands-on demonstrations, and conversational science communication. The result was an engaging educational experience that sparked curiosity and made neuroscience feel approachable and relevant.

Process and Approach

Research

Conducted background research on community neuroscience literacy gaps and existing Brain Awareness initiatives. Reviewed Society for Neuroscience (SfN) outreach standards, age-appropriate learning models, and prior BrainFest programming to identify opportunities for clearer science communication, increased engagement, and inclusive educational design. Defined target audiences (students, families, non-science attendees) and learning objectives to guide content development.

Design

Designed accessible, visually engaging educational materials that translated complex neuroscience concepts into clear, interactive experiences. Focused on clarity, approachability, and curiosity-driven learning using simplified language, visuals, and hands-on demonstrations. Collaborated with team members to ensure content accuracy while maintaining an inviting, non-intimidating tone for first-time learners.

Execution

Supported on-site BrainFest programming through direct community engagement, facilitation of educational activities, and attendee interaction. Assisted with event setup, guided participants through neuroscience demonstrations, and answered questions in real time. Adapted communication style to different age groups and knowledge levels to ensure an inclusive and engaging experience for all attendees.

Results

Successfully contributed to a community-focused neuroscience education event that increased public engagement and awareness of brain science. The initiative fostered curiosity, encouraged STEM interest among students, and strengthened connections between researchers and the community. This project reinforced the value of translating scientific research into accessible, real-world education.
